Review: Jamie's Fowl Dinners

>> Aug 3, 2009

Have you ever given much thought to where your chicken or eggs come from? If you're like me, probably not. Until I watched "Jamie Oliver's Fowl Dinners". In "Fowl Dinners", Jamie sets out to bring awareness to consumers about the poultry market and farming practices. If you're squeemish, beware. Jamie, who is known for his straight-laced approach, doesn't hold back.

I think the show brings awareness, and portrays chicken and egg farming in a truthful light. I appreciate the fact that Jamie makes no attempt to push a personal agenda or vegetarianism (in fact, he cooks the audience a lovely chicken dinner at the end), and he considers the consumers, rather than farmers, responsible for the current situation. By demanding cheaper and cheaper meat and egg prices, Jamie says, farmers are forced to cut corners to keep afloat.

In our urbanized society, we have become so disconnected from the origin of our meals. Sometimes we forget that "real" food doesn't come in a box or pre-marinated. I think we take for granted the convenience, and forget that with convenience and lower prices there is often a cost. If you're concerned about the welfare of livestock and humane farming practices, or just interested in how food is getting to your plate, I highly recommend this show.
